Application Essay/Supplement Coach

The college essay and supplemental writing portion of the college application present an opportunity for an applicant to set themselves apart.

College application essays and supplements ask students to write personal pieces that highlight who they are beyond life in academics. This requires a writing style different from most high school assignments. As admissions become increasingly competitive at every level, applicants must present their best versions through their writing.

Because a student's personal statement should highlight his or her singularity - the unique contributions he or she would make to a school - the goal is to guide the student toward a final essay that is not only well-organized and polished but also effective in showcasing his or her personality and individual voice.

As a coach, Gwen works with a student at any point during the college application process. Some students are looking for the full package—someone to help them choose a topic, brainstorm, plan, draft, revise, and edit their essays and supplemental pieces. Others may only need feedback once the first draft of an essay has been written. The goal is to customize the approach to whatever the applicant’s needs may be.

After an initial meeting where the applicant and Gwen discuss his/her goals/needs, a plan of action will be proposed with a schedule for the applicant and Gwen to follow. Using Zoom and Google Docs, applicants will collaborate remotely, allowing for ultimate flexibility.

Online Common Application Reviews

In 2017, the Common App made it possible for students to invite anyone they choose to access their application in the role of an "Advisor." This allows Gwen to check not only for content but for typos, as well! Gwen does not have access to individual college supplements and questions and cannot proofread these unless the student submits them to her via Google Docs.
